Abstract

The research objective was to test how external institutional factors improves the environmental management systems which leads to improved sustainable performance through increasing mechanical operational efficiency. The moderating role of green organizational culture was also tested. To get this objective, a self-administered questionnaire data was collected from employees of manufacturing companies using convenient sampling technique. Hypothesis results showed that all institutional factors have a positive and significant impact on the environmental management system. In other words, an environmental management system also positively and significantly influences the mechanical operational efficiency. Furthermore, mechanical operational efficiency also positively and significantly influences sustainable performance. Further moderating results showed that green organizational culture positively and significantly moderated the relationship between environmental management system and sustainable performance. The study with its findings contributed that companies should focus on institutional factors because institutional pressures enhance environmental management systems, which improve mechanical operational efficiency and sustainable performance, while green organizational culture strengthens this relationship. Practically, the findings contributed that organizations should adopt effective environmental management systems and foster a strong green culture to achieve higher operational efficiency and long-term sustainability.
